1938 "The Pity Of It" Drive Carefully Stamp (fraudulant stamp) P109S07 SOLD
Text of article appearing in the Oshkosh Daily Northwestern on October 4, 1938: SAFETY SEAL SALE NOT SPONSORED BY AMERICAN LEGION Post Commander Voss Says Organization Has Nothing to Do With Stickers Offered Here Officials of the American Legion, police and the Chamber of Commerce joined today in a warning to the public to avoid purchasing stamps purporting to have been issued to raise funds to sponsor a public safety drive. Herbert F. Voss, commander of Atley H. Cook post No. 70, of the American Legion, said it had been called to his attention that stamps were sold in a book the cover of which advertised "Oshkosh Safety Week, Oct. 29 to Nov. 3." The buyer was urged further to "Please use these 'Drive Carefully' seals *hroughout the year." Although the cover proclaimed that the sale was sponsored by the Oshkosh American Legion, in cooperation with the Oshkosh city safety council, Mr. Voss said this was a false claim. Officials pointed out that no organization known as the city safety council exists. INVOKES SYMPATHY The cover invoked sympathy with an illustration showing a tearful child, with the family canine pet, and the words, "Where's My Daddy." The stamps showed a man carrying a child, with the inscriptions, "The Pity of It," and "Drive Carefully." Neither police nor J. B. Cudlip, Chamber of Commerce secretary, had any knowledge of an Oshkosh safety week program. Mr. Voss said the American Legion sponsors safety as part of its year-round program but has not sponsored the sale of any stamps. With the approach of the 1939 state Legion convention in Oshkosh, he warned that racketeers may capitalize by -starting similar campaigns, under the guise of Legion sponsorship. Mr. Voss warned anyone approached and urged to buy anything under circumstances such as these to inquire of Legion officials before contributing. |
